Dian Fossey was the Lady Who Loved Gorillas and Wild Life

By profession she was a zoologist and a diligent researcher on wild life, but in reality Dian Fossey was an ardent lover of wild animals especially gorillas, their life cycle, etc. She was perhaps the first ecologist who could smell the adverse effect of wild life tourism and poaching on lives of innocent wild animals like Gorillas. She did her extensive study and research on endangered Gorillas in Rwanda Hill area.

Dian Fossey was a lady with a golden heart but equally she was known as an iron lady to her enemies and critics. Her selection to work in Africa was her meticulous planning to work for endangered species of Gorilla. Initially she started working under famous paleoanthropologist Louis Leakey, under whose recommendation she selected Rwanda Hill area for research base. She later on wrote her famous book “Gorillas on the Mist” based on this extensive study.

During her research Fossey revealed lots of interesting information about Gorillas and these new points and information helped wild life experts to know new details about these apparently dangerous looking but innocent and shy animals.  She shared real facts about Gorillas and their social and family bonds, their food habits, different character traits, and their living-style were studied and discussed with minute details. Gradually Fossey became quite dear and near ones to these Gorilla group, which she cherished a lot. She found that wild life tourism is harmful for normal life style and growth of Gorillas: later besides her research, she raised her voice against poaching and frequent wild life tourism where endangered animals get mostly disturbed and tortured.

In 1985, Fossey was assassinated by an unknown slayer in her study cabin. After her death the Digit fund (named after her pet chimpanzee) was renamed to honor her authenticity and love for wildlife. However, her study yielded positive result: mountain gorillas are no more endangered now…last few years they are increasing by their population in at least in Rwanda Hill area.
